In a corner with a cake (or two) ­– the hidden attraction of local hangouts

Tucked away in a corner at the Ainslie shops where it’s easy to miss entirely is an unexpected delight, the French café Breizh (French from Brittany, specifically). The location has hosted a series of less than successful ventures but this most recent has been an unqualified success. It is tucked away in this lost corner of the surrounding shops but I have become a serious regular, along with many more besides.

Who would have thought that a cafe hailing from Brittany could attract such a crowd. The secret of success is that it focuses on what it does and it does it well. You can park yourself inside the small venue or outside if the weather is fine and pick from some unexpected sweet pastries or throw down the odd glass of French wine or eat buckwheat pancakes or baguettes. The cafe also runs to daily specials that can be very unexpected.

Ainslie is affectionally known as the Red Centre because it supposedly has the highest Labor vote of any electorate in Australia. It must be all those public servants charged with keeping our politicians honest, who have seen them up way too close and personal.To deal with the pressure - if they aren't driven to drink or to voting - they turn to the comforts of patisseries, specifically this one.

The other day I was chomping my way through a superb vanilla mousseline and raspberry tart when I realised that I needed to share the news about Breizh. Alas I had eaten so much of the cake it was unrecognisable and I had to photograph another behind the glass cabinet to prove it exists (which leads us to the traditional philosophical question – if a vanilla mousseline and raspberry tart is eaten in a café and no-one sees it, does it really exist?) I know it does because I’ve tasted it – and told everyone else about it.

Long may it reign over us – Rule Brittany rather than Rule Britannia.

Stop Press: After a successful trial run over the last two weeks, Breizh Café is open for dinner Saturday nights. It’s offering its normal menu plus blackboard specials with table service. It’s in the fabulous but somewhat neglected though stately Melbourne Building, with its Italianate arches and colonnades. I sometimes think that if suddenly the world was about to end (a bit like contemporary times) and I was offered the choice of only one cuisine until the crunch, I’d have to choose Italian. ‘Pod Food is in the heart of the slightly ramshackle gardening and nursery hub of Canberra, Pialligo , adjacent to the burgeoning exercise in urban growth called Canberra Airport. It was always the place you went to get large pots and even larger apples. Pod Food was always good enough – but now it is something a whole lot more impressive. On a rainy Friday I entered through their marvellous cottage garden entrance way to sit on the covered and contained outside deck. The entrance to Pod Food, formerly part of an operating nursery, is the sort of garden I eventually want to have. It felt highly suitable sitting at the entrance to the Australian high country as the rain came down, drinking the fine product of another high region on the opposite side of the world’, Peas in a pod – food takes off.

‘It had been quite a week and I had been crushed by too many encounters with the crazy world of Centrelink as I fulfilled my long list of aged care responsibilities. I needed cheering up so last night ate out at the venerable Italian and Sons, the very first of the many funky venues which now enliven Braddon. My attention was drawn to the rare appearance of vitello tonnato. My imagination had been captured decades ago when I was a young boy by seeing the recipe for the dish in Margaret Fulton’s classic cookbook. I finally tried it in a tiny restaurant in Florence, during my first visit overseas, after a stint at the massive Frankfurt Book Fair in 1989. This most recent one was the best I have ever eaten outside my own home – well, perhaps the best anywhere. This is a favourite place, probably my most favourite in Canberra. ‘Where the market gardens that supplied Canberra as far back as the 1820s used to be a small fortune has been spent turning 86 acres overlooking the Eastern end of Lake Burley Griffin into a superb regional restaurant, Pialligo Estate Farmhouse Restaurant. It made for a tremendous birthday lunch in a spacious airy and light space, full of exciting food treated well. I couldn’t take my eyes off the copper guttering and downpipes. I thought all the loose copper in the world had already been stolen but clearly it’s still available. It’s quite clear that even though work is still being finalised, when it is finished it will be a spectacular addition to the nation’s capital and the region’, Smoking for broke beside the Molongolo.

Provenance - knowing where good things come from
‘It took me only five years but I finally found my way to Provenance, the legendary regional restaurant established by chef Michael Ryan in Beechworth in 2010. Provenance is widely considered one of the best restaurants in regional Victoria, in a tiny state that contains many good regional restaurants. I had been meaning to eat there since it was established and given how regularly we travel to Beechworth and its surrounds I was amazed I hadn’t been earlier. We all scream for icecream – cooling down in a cold climate with Frugii

I realise I may have just become a statistic. I have a suspicion that I eaten more sorbet, gelato and icecream since local Canberra icecream outlet Frugii opened in Canberra’s Braddon perimeter than I have eaten in my whole previous life. Tucked away in hipster heaven, it keeps churning out flavours, in an ever-changing smorgasbord of coldness.

Liquorice (and liquorice with dark chocolate for those for whom one is never enough, even if two is far too many)


Frugii bills itself as a dessert laboratory, highly appropriate in a city of scientists. The moniker is even more appropriate when you consider that the Canberra wine industry was largely established by CSIRO scientists in their spare time – I suppose when they weren't eradicating rabbits or inventing wi-fi or a treatment for flu or tracking NASA satellites.

I used to be a disciple of that Sydney gelato destination, Gelato Messina. I tried to visit every time I went to Sydney but this is even better (and closer).

Like the sadly depleted CSIRO, Frugii delivers the goods – whether gelato, sorbet or icecream – with an ever-changing panoply of flavours. My favourites are many but my latest are liquorice and cardamon (not in the same scoop but happily on the same crisp, crunchy cone) but they have also ventured into truffles during the truffle season, and seafood laksa ice cream and butter chicken ice cream for the Canberra Curry Festival. For me those savoury flavours are probably a bridge too far, but you've got to admire their innovative drive. Maybe they'll be tracking NASA satellites next.

Picking my way through a minefield of tulips

In Canberra it has been freezing. The truth is that, while I enjoy the warm weather and especially autumn and spring when Canberra really shines, I like winter. It is the perfect time to think about gardens. Before long it will be time for transplanting and rearranging to reflect the uneven way the garden has been growing over the last 12 months. Before then, though, I’m looking forward to the tulips coming up.

 Last year for the first time I planted tulips – a veritable minefield of them. When the neighbours across the road moved into a retirement village – they had lived in this North Canberra suburb since it was established in the mid 1960s – they offered me a bucket of tulip bulbs. Of course I said yes. It took me hours to plant them. In the end I ran out of garden.

I wondered how many would come up. Then stem by stem they did. When I came back from two and a half weeks away on a regional road trip to Adelaide, I was amazed that some were already flowering. Then they all started flowering - every one. I decided to count them. There were well over 500 tulips in my yard, in fact 535 – but who’s counting?


Last year: a minefield of tulips - and a wall of hedge.

Now I am waiting for them to explode in colour again. On a cold morning, with frost in the offing, I got excited when I saw the first tulip of the season appearing through the mulch. When I looked again, I realised there were four, then over the following weeks, many more. Soon there should be thousands. When I see that field of flowers I could forget every stupid arts funding decision or bad policy I have ever seen.

It’s a mighty minefield of tulips, ready to explode in colours of every hue. This is the only sort of ordnance that should be left in war-torn countries.

My imagination had been captured decades ago when I was a young boy by seeing the recipe for the dish in Margaret Fulton’s classic cookbook. I finally tried it in a tiny restaurant in Florence, during my first visit overseas, after a stint at the massive Frankfurt Book Fair in 1989. This most recent one was the best I have ever eaten outside my own home – well, perhaps the best anywhere. This is a favourite place, probably my most favourite in Canberra. ‘Where the market gardens that supplied Canberra as far back as the 1820s used to be a small fortune has been spent turning 86 acres overlooking the Eastern end of Lake Burley Griffin into a superb regional restaurant, Pialligo Estate Farmhouse Restaurant. It made for a tremendous birthday lunch in a spacious airy and light space, full of exciting food treated well. I couldn’t take my eyes off the copper guttering and downpipes. I thought all the loose copper in the world had already been stolen but clearly it’s still available. It’s quite clear that even though work is still being finalised, when it is finished it will be a spectacular addition to the nation’s capital and the region’, Smoking for broke beside the Molongolo.

A bustling Friday night in hipster heaven

On a bustling Friday night in hipster heaven, I popped into my favourite Canberra restaurant, Italian and Sons, planning for little more than a quick bite to eat. I managed to get my favourite spot – when I’m not settled comfortably in Bacaro, the adjoining bar out the back, that is – sitting in the window, watching the action on the street. If here’s two of you you sit side by side which beats leaning across the width of a table to shout conversation amongst the floor to ceiling bare timber walls. I was back where I belong.

Seated and settled, I started with the rosemary and focaccia bread I always order, dipped liberally into olive oil. Sigh. Then I got straight to the point. I equivocated over the home made chestnut pappardelle with porcini mushrooms and pork and fennel sausage with chilli – which I would very happily have eaten with gusto – but I left that to my partner in crime. Instead I headed straight for a real blast from my Adelaide past, part of my earliest discovery of Italian cuisine – saltimbocca. It’s name – literally ‘jump in the mouth’ – is well chosen. Coincidentally it's the same dish I had out the back the last time I was here - as I realised the next day, Once again, this version did the tradition proud, with tender slices of veal, lined with prosciutto, sitting on spinach with the taste of the white wine it had been cooked in and the sage hidden in the slice. With a rocket, sliced fennel, orange and almond salad accompanying it, I was content.

Then, spilling out in what was rapidly becoming a chilly evening – winter is on the way in the high country – I beat a path down Lonsdale Street to Frugii, Canberra’s own dessert laboratory. I thought I don’t even like icecream all that much but Frugii has turned me to the dark side – dark chocolate side, that is. I scanned the specials and thought I’d give the rosewater a try. I tried a sample and it was definitely the go. A cone with two scoops – rosewater and cardamon. Divine.

I used to opportunity to check out the window of AGENCY, the newly-opened retail outlet for Craft ACT, that opposite Frugii. Food and art, icecream and craft, facing off across the passage, everything in handy distance. Italian and Sons and then icecream as good as this. That’s my idea of a successful evening outing. What is happening to this city? It’s getting cooler by the minute and it’s not just the icecream or the approach of winter.

‘I've always had a weak spot for Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands of NSW. I have been watching it slowly change over the decades since. The latest addition is a new and very funky bar, Wine Mosaic Lounge, combined with a wine vendor, Argyle Street Wine Merchant. Passing through, we stopped to sample it. 'I’ve been entertained by the heated discussion about whether Canberra is cool or not. The question of regional cities and cool capitals is one that won’t go away. ‘In winter your mind turns to food - well, it turns there anytime, but perhaps more so in winter. I can’t remember how many years I have been coming to Grazing restaurant, in the tiny historic town of Gundaroo, just outside Canberra – it seems like forever. In the time I’ve been coming here Prime Ministers have risen and fallen, Governments have teetered, illusions have shattered. On a Sunday recently, I ventured out from the cold of approaching winter on a clear, blue day and went there one more time for food, wine and firewood. ‘I seem to spend a lot of time in the small Italian and Sons restaurant in hipster heaven in downtown Braddon, with its equally small bar annexe, Bacaro, at the rear. It’s so good and so pleasant that it’s easy to forget the other parts of the Italian empire. The flagship restaurant, Mezzalira, is across the the city, near the National University. It’s in the fabulous but somewhat neglected though stately Melbourne Building, with its Italianate arches and colonnades. I sometimes think that if suddenly the world was about to end (a bit like contemporary times) and I was offered the choice of only one cuisine until the crunch, I’d have to choose Italian. ‘Because the high country is adjacent to the low country, it takes only three hours to drive from the nation’s capital to the nation’s financial capital. In the early to mid 1990s Chippendale in Sydney was a suburb you travelled through to get somewhere else. All that is changing in a big way, with plenty there to explore. A sure sign of these times is eatery Ester, a restaurant that reflects the focus of its name on the science of food with some intrepid experiments in the culinary arts’, Ester – the sweet smell of success.

‘Tucked away in a corner at the Ainslie shops where it’s easy to miss entirely ­– in the heart of the suburb know as the Red Centre for it’s exceptionally high Labor vote – is an unexpected delight. The location has hosted a series of less than successful ventures but this most recent has been an unqualified success. Who would have thought that a cafe hailing from Brittany could attract such a crowd. The secret of success is that it focuses on what it does and it does it well. You can park yourself inside the small venue or outside if the weather is fine and pick from some unexpected sweet pastries, throw down the odd glass of French wine or eat buckwheat pancakes or baguettes. The cafe also runs to daily specials that can be very unexpected. Long may it reign over us – Rule Brittany rather than Rule Britannia’, In a corner with a cake (or two) – the hidden attraction of local hangouts.

We all scream for icecream – cooling down in a cold climate with Frugii 
‘I realise I may have just become a statistic. I have a suspicion that I have eaten more sorbet, gelato and icecream since local Canberra icecream outlet Frugii opened in Canberra’s Braddon perimeter than I have eaten in my whole previous life. Tucked away in hipster heaven, it keeps churning out flavours, in an ever changing smorgasbord of coldness’, We all scream for icecream – cooling down in a cold climate with Frugii.

‘Pod Food is in the heart of the slightly ramshackle gardening and nursery hub of Canberra, Pialligo , adjacent to the burgeoning exercise in urban growth called Canberra Airport. It was always the place you went to get large pots and even larger apples. Pod Food was always good enough – but now it is something a whole lot more impressive. On a rainy Friday I entered through their marvellous cottage garden entrance way to sit on the covered and contained outside deck. The entrance to Pod Food, formerly part of an operating nursery, is the sort of garden I eventually want to have. It felt highly suitable sitting at the entrance to the Australian high country as the rain came down, drinking the fine product of another high region on the opposite side of the world’, Peas in a pod – food takes off.

Provenance - knowing where good things come from
‘It took me only five years but I finally found my way to Provenance, the legendary regional restaurant established by chef Michael Ryan in Beechworth in 2010. Provenance is widely considered one of the best restaurants in regional Victoria, in a tiny state that contains many good regional restaurants. I had been meaning to eat there since it was established and given how regularly we travel to Beechworth and its surrounds I was amazed I hadn’t been earlier. The virtual world – research and commentary on Australian arts and culture

When I established my blog ‘indefinite article’, a couple of years back, it was because I wanted to research and comment on Australian arts and culture. This is my main blog that gets most views. It seems to have taken off. I’d always thought that, given the specialist subject matter – after all it’s not a popular culture blog like a cooking one – that it would grow steadily but no more, which all along is what I had wanted. The rate of growth has surprised me. Now, I’m starting to focus on the other blogs that have played second fiddle – about short humour, gardening and cooking and creative writing.

When I first established my blog ‘indefinite article’, a couple of years back, it was because I wanted to research and comment on Australian arts and culture, something I know something about from working for over 35 years in the arts and culture sector. I could have written about other subjects but that would just be me expressing my opinions like every other man, woman and their dog (and cat) on social media. ‘Who cares?’ I thought. ‘indefinite article’ is irreverent articles about contemporary Australian society, popular culture, the creative economy and the digital and online world – life in the trenches and on the beaches of the information age. This is my main blog and it’s the one that gets most views.

Ages ago I used the phrase on this image, thinking that I had very cleverly been the first person to think of. Recently I saw the same phrase, virtually word for word, on an Internet meme. Whether my words just drifted around on their own and were picked up and reused or whether, more likely, it's just a case of a good idea appearing at the same time in many different widely separated places, is hard to tell. There are no secrets or possessions on the Internet. Here's my illustrated take on the meme.

On the morning of 25 February it passed 8,000 views and is now just over 100 views short of the next milestone of 9,000 views. It seems only a short time ago that I was celebrating having passed 7,000 views. That amount represented the total views from when I effectively started the blog, when I left the public service in late February 2014, to 25 February this year, a period of just under two years. My most recent jump of 1,000 views, from 7,000 to 8,000, took just 5.5 weeks. Three days later I was already a quarter of the way to my next thousand, 9,000 views. I seem to have settled around 1,000 views a month.

Squatting on the main road – the Old Canberra Inn is new again

The Old Canberra Inn has squatted on a main road in my vicinity for as long as I can remember – and obviously, as it was built in the 19th Century, as long as anyone else can remember. It always looked really old in that aged, stooped sort of way and, apart from acknowledging its age, I gave it no further thought over the years.

It seems to have changed hands – or maybe it’s just that I’ve finally looked at it more closely – but its a terrific local pub. I’ve already been there several times and enjoyed it thoroughly. Obviously I’m not the only one because it always seem to be busy. On the most recent night I was there a stream of fit looking people, dressed in assorted forms of exercise and sport gear popped in for drinks and meals.

It’s part of the beer revolution, with a very tempting choice of interesting beers that actually taste like beer. I had a pint of one of Cream of the Hop experimental beers from Modus Operandi, a Northern Beaches brewer from Sydney that was a very refreshing experience.

A princess comes home – paulownia trees and Japanese wedding chests

Recently I planted a new tree in my garden – a paulownia tree. It needs a fair bit of water but it has been going great guns. I saw it at the local Farmers Market and was surprised that they were selling it, since I had thought it was rare in Australia.

Paulownia tree gets a head start in life

The reason it took me by surprise and why I bought it is that I have a Japanese wedding chest from sometime around the 1930s from the Tokyo Region. I drove to Sydney to get it and had to pack the car like some complex puzzle, moving pieces around until it all fitted. The reason I could do this is that Japanese chests like this were often used by merchants travelling around and they are made in sections clipped together that can be separated and stacked.
